If I was in the Roman Republic government, I would want to be a Tribune, this way I could represent the poor people, and I could speak for them and try to make laws more fair for the Plebians who make up 95% of the population.
Patricians were wealthy landowners who made up about 5% of the population, but they made most of the government, they were very free and had lots of rights. Plebeians were farmers, artists, etc. who made up 95% of the population, but were barely in the government. They were free and had some rights.
For a while in Ancient Rome, the laws were created by word of mouth, and they were changed everyday, and new laws were made everyday, and the Plebeians never knew about it. So the Plebeians asked government officials, and the Patricians to write down the laws so they knew what they were, and the Patricians also asked them that once they were written down, they couldn't be change. The government and Patricians agreed to this, so they wrote/created the twelve tables, so the twelve tables had a positive affect on the Plebeians, because it allowed them to know what the laws were.
Rome switched from a monarchy to a republic, because one day there would be a King/Queen/Dictator, then the next day they would be overthrown, and a new dictator would come in, and it just caused chaos, and they wanted to become a more civilized and organized government. They were just tired of one person with to much power, so they also wanted to create an equal government, so they created multiple branches that were all equal in power, this system is called checks and balances.
The Roman Republic is like the United States Government, because they each consist of the same three branches, which are Legislative Branch, Judaical branch, and the Executive branch. Another way we are the same is both governments had 1 or 2 people who controlled the whole Executive branch, (2 Consuls for Rome, one President for United States.) Lastly, we are the same because we both use checks and balances to make sure that all branches of government are always equal. The two governments are different because when the Roman Republic needs help, they call in a dictator who makes the decisions for them for six months, if the U.S needs help, they ask other countries (allies) for help.
